The Johnsons lived in a modest house. It was not so grand, but it was cozy and warm, with a creaky staircase and walls full of family photos. The living room was simple, with a small artificial tree covered in mismatched ornaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two Johnson kids, Ellie, 10, and Ben, 8, were buzzing with excitement. It was Christmas Eve and they were determined to stay up and catch Santa in the act. Covered with their blankets on the couch, they whispered to each other, giggling every time the wind shook the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, exhaustion caught up with them, and they fell asleep under the blanket, dreams of Santa and mountains of gifts swirling in their minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When morning arrived, the kids raced to the tree, their excitement bubbling over. But when they saw the presents; a few books, a board game, and new winter coats, their smiles faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie frowned, holding up her coat. \u201cThat\u2019s it? No toys? No gadgets?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben wrinkled his nose. \u201cWe waited all night for this? It\u2019s\u2026 nothing!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the kitchen, their mom whispered to their dad. \u201cWe did everything we could.\u201d The dad nodded, rubbing his tired eyes. \u201cI worked double shifts for weeks, and you picked up extra hours every weekend. We spent every last bit of our savings to give them this Christmas.\u201d His voice cracked. \u201cI just wanted them to have something special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie and Ben froze in the living room, their parents\u2019 words hitting them like a snowstorm. Slowly, they crept through the doorway and peeked into the kitchen. Their mom and dad were sitting at the small table, whispering about how much they hoped their kids would be happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie glanced at Ben, guilt written all over her face. \u201cThey worked extra? Just for us?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben\u2019s eyes grew wide as he swallowed hard. \u201cI\u2026 didn\u2019t know,\u201d he murmured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two of them turned back to the tree, looking at the gifts with fresh eyes. The board game, they realized, was something they could all enjoy together. The coats, though simple, were warm and carefully chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie picked up her coat and hugged it tightly. \u201cIt\u2019s warm,\u201d she said softly. \u201cAnd pretty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben picked up the board game and smiled. \u201cWe can all play this later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The siblings walked into the kitchen, tears rolling down their eyes, and wrapped their arms around their parents. \u201cThank you,\u201d Ellie said, her voice trembling. \u201cWe love our gifts. And we love you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That Christmas, Ellie and Ben understood what they had never realized before: true joy came from love, sacrifice, and being together as a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
